The Legend of Boruta

ticklestill_catacombs02.jpg

The year is 1939; Nazi Germany has recently invaded Poland, and many small towns and villages have already become victims of the German raid. A regiment of Nazi soldiers arrive upon a small church nestled in the sprawling wheat fields surrounding the small town of Leczyca. As they enter the church grounds, a low-ranking soldier is ordered into the catacombs deep beneath the church to search for valuables and items of historical and cultural significance for appropriation. Reluctantly, the young soldier heads down, and discovers he has been tainted by the stolen goods, further building the Legend of Boruta.

An animated grad-film project made by Bartosz Nowakowski at the Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design.

Hubert Robert. A Fortunate Life.

Aleksandr Sokurov’s personal essay on the the work of French painter Hubert Robert (1733–1808) begins with scenes from a Japanese play filmed in slow motion. Robert’s pictorial world unfolds as we enter landscapes, grandiose architectures, and ruins — until a “meeting” between Sokurov and Robert incorporates the painter’s work within the filmmaker’s own. With a sound track of music by Albinoni, Glinka, Mozart, and Tchaikovsky combined with the sounds of storms, rain, and birds, the film evokes the mysterious links between biography and autobiography.

Tuesday

Tuesday - dir: Asa Arnehed, 5:57

A beautiful short animation by Swedish director Åsa Arnehed. Here’s what Andrew Allen said on his place at Short of the Week, where I’ve found the film:

It moves at a crawling pace that, ironically, catches your attention among the mish mash of seizure-inducing videos online. Everyone fights for attention by making things bigger, brighter, and faster, and so no one stands out. It takes a well-timed film like this to bring things back into balance.
