Moonbird – 1959 Oscar Winning Animated short

Moonbird - 1959 Oscar Winning Animated short

Animating real audio recordings has become quite common. There is, however, a certain freshness of the idea in Moonbird. There is a real sense of discovery in every twist and turn in the ramblings of the little children. Ramblings you can neither write or act out such as this.

Brad Bird’s Family Dog

Brad Bird’s Family Dog

From the director who brought you The Incredibles and Ratatouille comes Family Dog. A short film that Bird directed early in his career. It is an absolute gem. One of my all time favorite animated shorts. You can find many traces of Ratatouille in this film.

Every element of the animation is expressive, from the rug to the character’s pants, to the nose to the hair. All these elements hide the weak story. It almost feels like a Shrek sequel where we move from one joke to another instead of one plot point to the next.

This short was originally created for Steven Spielberg’s Amazing Stories, an 80’s television show.

Johnny Depp & Marimba Ponies

Saw this link over at BoingBoing, I expected an awkward celebrity moment but instead it was more of a celebration of childhood. Now you might say that is a pretty broad statement but if you watch the videos, you will surely agree. A bunch of Japanese kids put on a show on a Japanese show for Johnny Depp who is there to promote Pirates of the Caribbean. The kids besides being talented also overflow with genuine excitement and childlike enthusiasm.

The Wiz

Here is a nice series of misdirected links that lead to something beautiful, much like The Wiz or Wizard of the Oz. I was searching for more videos by W.I.Z, the director of the Dizze Rascal’s Sirens. I am then face to face with a scene from The Wiz titled Ease On Down The Road. It is a scene from the movie where Scarecrow (Michael Jackson) and Dorothy (Diana Ross) find the golden road to the Wiz. A disturbing scene in many ways, Michael Jackson’s voice has not change in the 30 years since the film. Also, it is public knowledge (gossip) that Michael butchered his face to look like Diana Ross. But look at Diana Singing Home from another part of the movie, she is incredible, who wouldn’t want to emulate all that beauty.

A little history, from Wikipedia:

The Wiz is a 1975 Broadway musical, an adaptation of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum exclusively featuring African American actors. The play features music and lyrics by Charlie Smalls, and a book by William F. Brown, and starred Stephanie Mills, Hinton Battle, Tiger Haynes, Ted Ross, Dee Dee Bridgewater, André DeShields, and Mabel King. A motion picture adaptation of The Wiz was produced in 1978 (see 1978 in film) by Motown Productions and Universal Pictures, starring Diana Ross (no relation to Ted), Michael Jackson, Nipsey Russell, Ted Ross, Lena Horne, Richard Pryor, and Mabel King.

Page d’ecriture

The best of (the first half of) April is up on No Fat Clips! As usual, here’s a pick…

Page d’ecriture follows a child in his classroom, during a boring Math lesson. The kid couldn’t care less about what the teacher is saying, and dreams of being free. As a bird…

The short was the hugest hit on my blog, last month, with the ludicrous count of 7 654 download requests.

The authors are: Filippo Giacomelli, Fabio Tonetto and Juan Francisco Correa Diaz, three students of the CSC, Italian national cinema school.

Thi short was made by Jim Henson and Frank Oz in 1967 as an IBM corporate and/or training video. At the time, the Cookie Monster was named Arnold the Munching Monster.

This should be the first appearence of the character, so I can barely imagine what the IBM employees may have tought when presented with such funny stuff!
