Broadcast Standards
IFC hired me to make something for a contest they were having. All they told me was that it had to be about the internet and visually very interesting. They didn’t want any logos or branding. They wanted it to be more of a short film than anything.
I decided to make the defining motif be color bars – how they’re employed by TV to reinforce broadcast standards, and how the Internet doesn’t have anything comparable.
I have to wonder what the standards will be for the internet if they do appear. My thoughts: in the next half-decade, the battle between Flash and QT will leave others in the dust in the format war. Content will certainly change, I doubt that virals will be as effective as they are now. Imagine spending your teenage years drowning in virals, it gets old quickly. The next generation of teenagers and twenty-somethings will certainly move onto something else. Not sure about online series’ as well, it can’t be something as distant as current reality television. Personal stuff in a creative way that has some sort of story string feels right.

quicktime versus flash? Where is the .mov?
Great find. That was a nice piece!
great work ajit!!! i particularly liked the end where everything starts to accelerate and distort- very effective ad! i ironically also just shot 3 quick ads for a different contest with similar goals behind it (generating user content for the web). seems like this might be a new theme for 2008…
not one of mine, andy. but thanks…
