Jolly Black Slaves

I am laughing at the excuses.
The Dutch celebrate “Saint Nicholas Day†in much the same way that Americans celebrate Christmas—only our elves are replaced by their “Black Petes.†Every December, white Dutch citizens paint their faces black, cover their heads in curly wigs, and carry on a tradition that has long passed its admissibility in The Netherlands’ multi-ethnic society. Inspired by David Sedaris’ “Six to Eight Black Men,†this film provides a first-hand look at one of the most shocking and offensive traditions still in practice today.
If we excuse offensive behavior because it is rich in tradition. Then there will be no end to offensive behavior. To our Dutch and other readers, what do you think?

My family is originally from Holland. My wife is black.
Just because something is “tradition” does not exclude it from being racist. Perhaps it was not offensive in it’s time, but it has become so now.
Would you be offended it your ethnic group was depicted as simple minded servents? I would be. Our little people offended that elves serve Santa? Is it ok to make fun of little people because elves are sort of imaginary? Perhaps these “Petes” are imaginary characters as well. Is it ok to use American Indians as mascots for sports teams? Is it ok to fly the confederate flag?
So many things are done today that are not intended to be racist/offensive by the person or people doing it…but end up being so towards someone else. Personally, I don’t get offended when I see a comedian mocking white people. But, I am not a minority group; I have not idea what it feels like to be a minority all the time. Until I do, I don’t think I’ll ever really have a say in many of these issues.
Lastly, why don’t they use real black people? Instead of painting white people?
as i thought about this more. I thought it was weird that the exuses such as the chimney ashes indicated guilt. they understand it is offensive. but they are 1) too stubborn 2) hate the idea a minority is going to change their tradition.
i also think just the black face would not be offensive because people paint their faces all the time. but this is clearly ridiculing black people which i think is silly. anyways, thanks for you comment.
SURPRISE! Racism is still alive and kicking.
P.S. I love ticklebooth. Thanks for not being blissfully unaware.
