Oscar Nominated Live Action Shorts (Re-Updated)

Here are the shorts that were nominated for the Oscars in the Live action shorts category. I posted the animated shorts yesterday.

Again, I am not disappointed but I am not impressed either. Shorts with noble intentions with conflict arising externally. Characters resemble people instead of persons. Stylistically, the films seem to be stuck in the past. But these are solid pieces with important messages.

- Ãramos pocos - Updated: link has been updated to Windows Media file with English Subtitles, the old Flash link with no subtitles is here (Thanks Dek). The general plot:

A shiftless jerk and his son enlist their feeble grandmother as their servant, but in the end, the joke is on them in a nifty comedy.

Wonderful ending.

- Binta and the Great Idea (29 min) - Another foreign short with no subtitles. Updated: The link has been updated to an English subtitled copy (Thanks Wendy), the old link is here. Here is the general idea translated into English by Google:

Rolling in Senegal with the UNICEF aid, leads to the spectator to the world of Binta, a girl of seven years who starts up an infantile play to show the desire of her premium to go to the school.

Unlike Éramos pocos, Binta relies heavily on dialogue, so much of cultural subtlety is lost on me. The soundtrack is excellent.

- West bank story (video has been taken down, the trailer is here. Thanks John) - Warning! The linked Youtube video is clearly a recording off the theater screen. So the quality is horrible. Never mind, the countless breaks in the recording. The short re-imagines the current Palestinian conflict as a musical, more specifically, as West Side Story with Jews and Muslims being the two groups in conflict. A kind of film you would expect to be nominated for the Oscars, relevant and entertaining.

- The Saviour - I was only able to find a short clip which looks very good. Largely because of cultural differences of the other shorts, this short seems the most intriguing of the bunch.
UPDATE: The whole short is here: Part1 - Part2 (tnx Erik! Boooo Akismet!)

- Helmer & Son - No clips of any kind. A one minute clip is hosted on iFilm. (thx, Michele)

Update: All of the Oscar nominated shorts are available on iTunes. (Thanks Rachel)

The West Bank Story clips (it was a few minutes from the beginning, and a few minutes from the end, with the middle completely cut) has been taken down. It had been uploaded by one of the actors — probably most of the scenes he was in. Probably taken down at the director’s request, but that’s speculation.

    Here’s the official trailer
