Fate?

Two clips that deal with the universally puzzling topic: fate.

First, Paul Thomas Anderson’s opening montage for his film Magnolia. A film I highly recommend, this is one of many great scenes and probably one of the best opening scenes.

Second, an animated short that deals with questions of fate and chance. And how those lead to superstition and fear.

Update: Trying to think of other films that deal with fate. The last scene in Pulp Fiction where Samuel Jackson aborts a robbery and then comes face to face with fate. And how it has made him rethink his life. Sadly this clip is not on Youtube but I am guessing everyone has seen it.

If you can think of other films or scenes, add it in the comments.

DaveX had an excellent suggestion: Terminator 2 when Linda tries to stop the future happening by killing someone in the present. Not on Youtube, however.

Eternal Sunshine also deals with Fate. Especially the original screenplay.

Update 2: Synapse has a very similar opening to Magnolia. Little more real and tragic.

The Danish Poet is a perfect fit here.

How about Terminator 2? There’s the scene where Linda Hamilton is carving “no fate” into a picnic table with a hunting knife, just before she tries to asassinate a man who has not yet (but might!) invent the technology that allows robots to H-bomb Los Angeles. It may not be the deepest movie out there, but it got me thinking about these ideas when I was a kid.
