“The Bridge” trailer

A feature length documentary on the San Fransisco Bridge would have worked splendidly as a PBS special but one that focused on the suicidal streak of the bridge seemed destined for some controversial release at some big name film festival, namely in this case, the the Tribeca Film Festival.
And here is the odd personal relationship I have with this documentary, I had wanted to do a documentary about the San Fransisco Bridge suicides. I read the same New Yorker story that inspired this film and wondered if I should move to the west coast for a while to cover this story. But it never worked out that way but I am kinda glad someone did because it is an important story to be told. The approach (at least detailed here at Kottke) would have probably been different. I say probably because the bridge authorities were adamant about keeping the lid on this odd phenomenon, hoping silence would make it less enticing for potential suiciders(?). But when you film a subject such as this, it is essential you have images to describe the horror of the moment otherwise you will achieve what the bridge authorities are trying to avoid — fascination, intrigue, curiosity about the act.
